What is ideal customer profile (icp)?
A strong ICP is 3–7 dimensions deep: company size (revenue or headcount), industry, tech stack, geography, team structure, growth stage, and a "negative trait" (e.g., "do not pursue companies with their own engineering team for our no-code product"). ICP is sharpened from the analysis of past closed-won deals — what was true about the 20 best customers? Conversely, ICP should also encode what was true about the worst churns. Teams with a vague or stale ICP waste 40–60% of outbound capacity on accounts that will never close.
Examples
- →B2B SaaS ICP: 50–500 employees, North America, $5M–$50M ARR, technical buyer in CTO/VP Eng
- →Cybersecurity ICP: regulated industries (finance, healthcare), 1,000+ employees, US/EU/UK
- →Anti-ICP / disqualifiers: pre-seed startups, single-person teams, agencies reselling our product
